The double glass façade for the Deutsche Guggenheim (Unter den Linden, Berlin) was designed by architect Novotny & Mähner in order to smoothen out the difference between the existing stone façade and the new double steel/aluminum topping up by a reflection. The glazing was monolithic clear fully tempered glass with stainless steel frames as projections of the existing window scheme. The glass and profiles are suspended from brackets at the roof top.
The large building tolerances of the two century old window frames demanded special attention to the detailing. An ‘adjustable’ detail was the basic principle in order to obtain a uniform look between the old and new building skin.
