Utrecht Central - Engineering Facades
In 2009, Octatube performed the engineering for the glass facades of Utrecht Central Station’s new concourse. This was done in collaboration with the project’s architects Benthem Crouwel. The structurally glazed facades have been designed according to the Quattro system.
Octatube was involved with three other relevant projects in the following years: the balustrades for the Rabobrug (a footbridge crossing the train tracks); the curtain wall facade of city hall; and a glass windscreen between the station building and city hall.
The new concourse was realized in December 2016. A promenade of 300 meters long with shops and restaurants crosses the train tracks and connects the city square with the station square. The concourse has been expanded due to the anticipated increase in visitors. Currently there are 88 million people using the station on a yearly basis, and this number is estimated to grow to 100 million in the year 2030. The station’s transformation makes it easier for travellers to orientate and to continue their journey.
The station’s transformation is expected to be finalised in 2018.
